Art Therapy

The Art Therapy degree at Emporia State University is a two-year program located within the Counselor Education department. The M.S. in Art Therapy program teaches students to utilize creative media for therapeutic purposes. This program offers students field experience through internships, allowing students to gain a working knowledge of their field. Students are also able to complete a dual curriculum between this program and the M.S. in Clinical Counseling program, resulting in two master’s degrees.

Clinical Counseling

The Clinical Counseling master’s degree at Emporia State University provides a comprehensive 60-hour educational program to develop culturally competent, professionally qualified and compassionate counselors. Graduates provide services to individuals and families who experience substance abuse, mental disorders, and physical, health, and sensory disabilities.

Emporia State faculty provides instruction in the traditional classroom and in the online environments. Students select the classes that fit your schedule and location. Approximately 90% of the core coursework is offered both on-campus and online. Students interact closely with professors and their student cohort to develop and practice their personal communication and professional counseling skills.

All concentrations in the Clinical Counseling program meet the educational requirements for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) credentials in Kansas and nationally.

Career Outlook

The counseling profession is experiencing faster than average growth nationally, particularly in the areas of mental health and addiction counseling (U.S. Bureau of Labor, 2016-2017). Counselors typically accept employment in the state, community, university, private practice and correctional settings.

Clinical Psychology

The master’s in Clinical Psychology at Emporia State University is a 60-hour program equipping students for a career studying human behavior and helping others. This degree prepares students for a career as a licensed clinical psychologist or gives them the opportunity to continue their education in a doctoral program. Class sizes are small and taught by professors who are licensed psychologists with real-world clinical experience.

The Clinical Psychology program provides students with opportunities to conduct research with faculty and learn to express themselves clearly in oral and written presentations. A required six credit hour internship will give students a hands-on learning experience in their chosen area.

A master’s degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Emporia State University will enable graduates to play a major role in a business or organization’s success by helping its employees be more productive and feel a sense of well-being in the workplace. Rehabilitation Counseling

Rehabilitation Counseling

The Rehabilitation Counseling master’s degree at Emporia State University also known is RC48, is an online 48-credit hour program for students desiring to assist individuals who have physical, mental, or emotional limitations. The curriculum is delivered in a distance format, allowing students to maintain employment and complete internships in their home communities.

Through practicum and internship experiences, students will gain the hands-on skills to effectively coordinate and provide vocational and social integration services to persons with disabilities. Since 1966, over 500 students have earned a master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling at ESU. RC48 is the only graduate-level rehabilitation education program in Kansas and Nebraska.

Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the national Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) exam.

Career Outlook

Rehabilitation counselors work with many populations, including veterans; persons who are deaf and hard of hearing, have visual impairments, developmental and physical disabilities; older individuals or senior citizens; juvenile/adult offenders; and persons with mental illness.

School Counseling

School Counseling

 The Master’s in School Counseling program at Emporia State University offers potential school counselors three ways to achieve their goal of helping children and adolescents successfully navigate their school years. The traditional program (45 credit hours) is for persons holding a current teaching license with two years of teaching experience; the Restricted Licensure program is for persons holding a degree in counseling-related fields; and Parallel Pathways (54 credit hours), is an initiative developed by the Kansas State Department of Education to license additional school counselors to serve in high need areas of Kansas. Approximately half of the coursework is online.

Once students have completed their master’s degree in school counseling, they will be eligible to apply for licensure in Kansas. Graduates must also complete a Praxis exam required by the Kansas State Department of Education followed by a two-semester, post-degree internship as they begin their work as a school counselor.

Career Outlook

As a school counselor, professionals will advocate for students, parents, and teachers, working with groups of students on topics ranging from improving study skills to character development and enhancing social skills. 92% of graduates in this program pass the licensure test on their first attempt.

School Psychology

School Psychology

Emporia State University offers both a Master of Science degree and an Educational Specialist degree (EdS) in School Psychology accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists. Graduates from the program will work with children with diverse characteristics and backgrounds, and in providing them preventative as well as remedial services to help them achieve success. As the first School Psychology program in Kansas, Emporia State has a legacy of excellence and the graduates serve in virtually every district and special education cooperative in Kansas.

Both the MS and EdS degrees in School Psychology prepare you to apply for the credential of Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Emporia State University also offers a graduate certificate program in the Psychology of Learning and Exceptionality for educators in community colleges and secondary settings needing to meet the 18-hour coursework requirements.

Career Outlook

Graduates of this program are equipped to provide a range of services to school children including psychological diagnosis, assessment, intervention, health promotion program development, and evaluation services.
