The value of experience versus education depends on the industry, but the HR professionals we spoke with shared common themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day everyone always wants the top candidate,\u201d said Briona, an HR administrator. \u201cThe person with a degree is always going to have the upper hand. As harsh as it sounds, it\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers often assume that candidates with a degree already have the foundational knowledge needed for the job. Applicants without a degree may be seen as requiring more training\u2014an additional cost for the company. As a result, many without a degree find themselves limited to entry-level positions, which usually come with lower pay and fewer benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, employers look for a balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEmployers and HR professionals are looking for a healthy mix of education and experience,\u201d Briona added. \u201cNo matter what, you sometimes have to work your way up.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applicant-tracking-systems-and-how-they-affect-the-success-of-your-resume\">Applicant Tracking Systems and how they affect the success of your resume:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) automatically filter resumes for keywords like \u201cbachelor\u2019s degree.\u201d If your resume doesn\u2019t include them, you may be rejected before a person even looks at your application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cScreening resumes takes about six seconds,\u201d said Tiffany, an HR generalist with seven years of experience. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at presentation\u2014is it readable, is it tailored? The more detailed you are, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> Even if you don\u2019t have a degree, make sure your resume includes keywords from the job posting.
