While this may be a wonderful benefit of military service that you should definitely make use of, you should also beware\u2014there are many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2015\/06\/for-profit-college-veterans-loophole\/396731\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">scammers out there looking to take advantage of you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">! And one of the most common sources of swindle are for-profit colleges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maybe you\u2019ve seen their slick ads or have been roped into one of their exploitative \u201cpain funnels\u201d aimed at using your personal pain points to get you to sign up with them. As persuasive as they may be, you\u2019re better off spending your U.S.-backed dollars at a non-profit school (like any of the ones on our site).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why? It\u2019s easy: for-profit colleges <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/money\/collection-post\/3573216\/veterans-college-for-profit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cost an average of $4,000 more than public colleges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and have sky-high dropout rates. As many as 60% of students who enrolled in some of the largest for-profit programs never received diplomas and left within a year of enrollment. Those same dropouts are now stuck with the bill and have no way to pay it. If you use your benefits on a for-profit, there is a good chance they could be squandered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here\u2019s a breakdown of how and why for-profit schools will treat you like a \u201cDollar Sign in Uniform\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Faking You Out with Official-Looking Materials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some for-profit schools have gone to unethical and even illegal lengths to convince veterans to enroll. In fact, a report from the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee found that seven of the eight companies that receive the most G.I. Bill funding are currently under investigation for \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/money\/collection-post\/3573216\/veterans-college-for-profit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">deceptive and misleading recruiting or other possible violations of state and federal law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n    <div class='abound-tweet'>\n        <a href='https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=+As+many+as+60%25+of+students+who+enrolled+in+some+of+the+largest+for-profit+programs+never+received+diplomas+and+left+within+a+year+of+enrollment.%C2%A0+https%3A%2F%2Fabound.college%2Ffinishcollege%2Fadvice%2Fhow-for-profit-schools-scam-veterans-wes-creel%2F'> As many as 60% of students who enrolled in some of the largest for-profit programs never received diplomas and left within a year of enrollment.\u00a0 <span class='abound-tweet-direction'>Click to tweet<\/span><\/a>\n    <\/div>\n    \n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s break down what that looks like with a few examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Corinthian Colleges illegally used the official seals of the United States Navy, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard in its advertising to veterans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Internet marketing company QuinnStreet was forced to pay the government $2.5 million after the company registered GIBill.com and used the seemingly official website to generate leads for for-profit colleges. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other schools have even recruited students at wounded warrior centers and hospitals. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You have to ask yourself how good a school can actually be if they have to resort to these kinds of practices. And in some cases, we can view education as a path to redemption. \u201cIf I get an education,\u201d we think, \u201cI can get a better job and get my life back on track.\u201d We often base these assumption on stories that we\u2019ve heard about this kind of success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of these stories are inspiring and true. Unfortunately, in the hands of the marketing and recruitment departments of many for-profit colleges, they are too often used as bait to draw you into what they call the \u201cPain Funnel\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/confessions-community-college-dean\/fail-state\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When interviewed, some former for-profit recruiters described how they had been specifically trained to exploit people\u2019s personal pain and disappointment.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> They are taught to take advantage of students\u2019 belief in the redemptive storyline mentioned earlier\u2014otherwise known as \u201cthe education gospel.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A recent documentary entitled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/failstatemovie.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fail State<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shares the story of a woman whose daughter had been killed at the young age of 20. Desperate to turn her own life around, she enrolled in, and eventually graduated from, a for-profit college. Guiding her along the whole way was a recruiter who acted acted like both a therapist and a friend. However, after graduation, she had a rude awakening: her degree was worthless in her field. Today, she\u2019s still at the same job as when she started, only now with $50,000 in debt that she blames on herself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For-profit schools are counting on students who drop out to blame themselves for being unable to finish or for not spotting the scam sooner; that\u2019s the only way they can continue to do what they do without the government intervening. Short of advocating for fairer conditions and rules in the field, your best bet is to avoid these schools altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Worthless Degrees<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we mentioned in the previous section, worthless degrees can be a big problem. But what is a \u201cworthless degree?\u201d Well, degrees can become worthless in a number of ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Degrees are worthless when:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They lack proper accreditation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abound.college\/finishcollege\/advice\/how-tell-if-degree-program-scam-wes-creel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">See our article on the topic for more details<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/many-students-profit-schools-left-debt-limbo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Employers do not value the curriculum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> covered in their courses.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unfortunately, too many students from for-profits end up deep in debt with a worthless degree, with little or no recourse against the schools that scammed them. Non-profit schools, on the other hand, are held to far higher standards and feature excellent student services to make sure you not only graduate, but are also able to find a good job once you graduate. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>    <div class='abound-tweet'>\n        <a href='https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=%26%238230%3Bsome+former+for-profit+recruiters+described+how+they+had+been+specifically+trained+to+exploit+people%E2%80%99s+personal+pain+and+disappointment.++https%3A%2F%2Fabound.college%2Ffinishcollege%2Fadvice%2Fhow-for-profit-schools-scam-veterans-wes-creel%2F'>&#8230;some former for-profit recruiters described how they had been specifically trained to exploit people\u2019s personal pain and disappointment.  <span class='abound-tweet-direction'>Click to tweet<\/span><\/a>\n    <\/div>\n    <\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Fudging the 90\/10 rule<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 1992, Congress approved a bill known as the \u2018<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/money\/collection-post\/3573216\/veterans-college-for-profit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">90\/10 rule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u2019 The rule says that, if a for-profit school wants to be eligible to receive federal assistance, at least 10% of their revenue has to come from private tuition dollars. In other words, they can\u2019t stay open by relying solely on government-funded students (through grants, financial aid, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But many have found a loophole: the G.I. Bill is technically counted as private funds. By targeting veterans for enrollment, for-profit universities can now make money entirely through government programs. That\u2019s why they need military servicemen\u2014already flush with pre-paid education funding\u2014so desperately. It\u2019s the main reason why they see you as a \u201cdollar sign in uniform.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Resources That Can Help<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Luckily for veterans, Uncle Sam has your back.
